A drone is an unmanned aircraft. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) are other terms for drones (UAS). A drone is essentially a flying robot that can be remotely or autonomously controlled by software-controlled flight plans in its embedded systems, which work in tandem with onboard sensors and a global positioning system (GPS).
Historically, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been associated with the military. They were initially used for anti-aircraft practice, intelligence gathering, and, more controversially, as weapons platforms.
Drones are now used for a wide range of civilian purposes, including search and rescue, surveillance, traffic monitoring, weather monitoring, firefighting, personal use, drone-based photography, and so on.
